Well Homearama in Ashville Park has started. The final touches were completed before the judging and everyone finished on time. How did we do?
We won Gold Awards for-
Best Craftsmanship in the Show
Best Use of Concrete
Most Efficient Floor Plan
Best Green Feature
Most Environmentally Friendly Floor Plan
The Virginian Pilot’s Readers choice Award
We also won Bronze awards for the Best Pool and Foyer.
The show has been great and the traffic flow has been as well. Feel free to join us at the house and get a copy of Greenie The Builder Saves Earth Day. The first book in a series of books about Greenie The Builder. Greenie is a cartoon character that builds green houses and helps others learn how to live their lives greener. The book is very successful.

There was a recent article in the paper about Homearama in Ashville Park this year. The article was about how there will only be 7 houses in this years show (because of the housing market). Like we needed another story about that. I’m tired of the doom and gloom in the paper all the time. There will be seven well built, beautiful homes that everyone can see in one day. How does one really enjoy 17 houses in one day. I’ve seen people that can’t get up the stairs because they are so tired from walking through ten houses. In other years people are rushing through the houses to see all 17 just so they can say they saw them all. They don’t get the chance to relax and enjoy the love and craftsmanship that goes into each house. Believe me when a builder is finished with a house he does love it like his child.
Lets look at some good stories in Homearama.
There will be a house that showcases the local baseball talent that has come from the Hampton Roads area. It seems to me we have a large number of professional baseball players from Hampton Roads. Why is that?
There will be a house that focuses on the history of Virginia Beach.
There is a charity house that is dedicated to a young boy that has struggled his entire life. This year it is built by The Walter Company. Kudos.
There is a house that may host a wedding for a soldier that was injured in Iraq.
There is a Virginia Art Festival House.
Then there is my favorite a green house with concrete walls, and solar panels that sells power to the power company. How great is that. The house that will cost less than $115/month to heat and cool. The Mothership. (Click on the link for updates and a video of the Tornado Test.)
All of this in a neighborhood that was designed by a nationally known designer. He has designed neighborhoods across the nation, Steven Fuller.
These are the real stories of Homearama. Forget the doom and gloom. Focus on the positive energy and remember Build Responsibly, Think Green

Boy aren’t we moving forward with technology. I was not sure what a blog was until recently. I was still doing newsletters. The problem with newsletters is that they are long and much like the newspaper by the time the reader gets the news its not news anymore. My intent with this blog is to keep the public informed as much as possible about the current things going on with Miller Custom Homes, Green Building, and the Hampton Roads housing market in general.

The mayor of Virginia Beach fired 2×4’s at 3 wall sections to demonstrate how flying debris in a storm will damage different wall types vinyl siding, brick veneer, and polysteel or ICF. Needless to say the Polysteel wall did not have any damage from the flying 2×4 even at 300 MPH. We are getting ready to post more pics too so stay tuned to the website.
There are many benefits to a Polysteel House including extreme energy efficiency. This 6571SF house will cost less than $115/month to heat and cool per month on average. We guarantee it. Put that together with the solar panels on the roof that will sell back about $100/month in electrical back to the power company and your heating and cooling bill will net to about $15/month. This is state of the art home building.
