Chuck Miller spoke at the Pella Pro Expo in Richmond on April 14th. In attendance were over 500 people including over 195 builders. All were treated to an evening of great food, drinks and raffle prizes including plasma TV’s, radios and duel flush toilets by Kohler.
They were also treated to a great education about green products currently available from Pella and other participating vendors as well. Chuck spoke to the group about the different things they could do to make their homes darker green and how to market green to their potential customers.

Chuck Miller will be a guest lecturer at Old Dominion University on April 2, 2009. He will be discussing “The Anatomy of a Green Home” what it means to be green, what it takes to build green. The lecture will be given in a Teletechnet room on campus. Students will not only be present in a face-to-face setting, but 55 more will be attending via satellite and video streaming from across the country and even in ships in the Middle East.
In the week following the class, students will work on solving a case study that Chuck and Dr. Michael J. Seiler (Professor and Robert M. Stanton Chair of Real Estate and Economic Development at ODU) wrote. The case describes ODU’s decision to rebuild the university president’s house and to what extent the house should be green. Chuck and Mike’s case study is also being submitted for publication in a Monograph on Green Building and Sustainable Real Estate.
(And my Dad never thought he would see the day.)

We had the first two Anatomy of a Green House presentations at The Mothership and they were a huge success, as was the one given to the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission. There was positive feedback and people learned a lot. There was a great energy in the room and Primo Pizza at Red Mill brought food to feed everyone during The Mothership presentations. They have great Italian food.
All the buzz in Tidewater is about this presentation. TBA heard the buzz. They have asked me to give the “Anatomy” presentation at the Home and Garden Show at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday February 14 and 15. The seminars will start at 1PM each day. There will be many other things to see there as well including a “green area” where several vendors will be displaying their green products.
Also my buddy Ed Begley Jr. will be there on Saturday promoting his new book “Living Like Ed”. Its gonna be a great time. We hope to see you there.
Our next Anatomy of a Green House seminar will be at The Mothership on February 28, 2009 at 2PM. Contact Paula Johnson-Irby at 757-477-0531 for reservation.

Everyone knows Green Building is an important part of the future of home building across the nation. January 30, 2009 I am on the agenda of the HRPDC to present the Anatomy of a Green House Seminar. This is a exciting opportunity for us to continue leading the Green Building movement in Hampton Roads and we are honored to have been chosen to present on the subject . Below is a copy of their agenda.
Home Building Innovations “The Anatomy of a Green House”
One of the environmentally friendly initiatives being pursued in Hampton Roads is the building of green houses like the EarthCraft House, which made its debut at the 2007 Homearama in Chesapeake. Builder Chuck Miller of Miller Custom Homes became a leader in the local green building movement by becoming one of the first builders in the area to qualify as an EarthCraft House certified builder. Mr. Miller will join us to discuss the anatomy of a green house and the impact of green building on the future of home building in Hampton Roads.

Well all you doubters out there the results are in. If you remember we guaranteed the heating and cooling cost of this 5350SF home to be no more than $92.00 per month. We collected one year of power bills from the homeowner and after we plugged the numbers in the computer we calculated the heating and cooling costs of “The EarthCraft House” to be $72.70 per month. It came in 20% less than what we promised. So once again I will continue to preach that building “Green” with Miller Custom Homes is the way to go. The day to day cost to operate a green house is less than a traditional home. Congratulations to the buyers.
Be sure to visit “The Mothership” in Ashville Park which is still available for purchase. You can own a Miller Custom Home “Green House” and have guaranteed heating and cooling bills of $115 per month.
