Green Building Tips For April 2009

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

1.   Air infiltration is the biggest cause of high energy bills in a home. A tube of caulk and some spray foam will do wonders to reduce your heating and cooling bills. Remember you want your house to breathe, but you want it to breathe in the right places which would be through the HVAC system not around windows and doors.

2.   CFL Light Bulbs use about 25% less energy than an incandescent bulb. This means you can run 4 CFL bulbs for the price of one incandescent bulb. 90% of the energy used to run an incandescent bulb is actually used to make heat not light.

3.   Unplug those appliances that are not running. They are trickling power through them. This is called a phantom load. Phantom load can be found in coffee machines, audio receivers, CD players, DVD players, and most chargers. Plug your phones and battery chargers into a strip outlet that can be easily unplugged or cut off to eliminate phantom power loss.
